The MP4/5 was based on its 1988 predecessor, the super-competitive MP4/4. Both cars were designed by Steve Nichols and both cars gave McLaren constructor and drivers championships during the 1988 and 1989 seasons. The MP4/5 like the MP4/4 had a separate upper body and though the monocoque looked similar to its forebears it incorporated a number of modifications as a result of a review and improvement of the car’s aerodynamic performance. McLaren used the MP4/5 for half of the 1989 season using the Weismann Longitudinal Transmission from the MP4/4.
